One Room Challenge Spring 2020: The Big Reveal!

Happy reveal day! Can you believe it has been 8 (almost 9) weeks since we started our kitchen gut and hardwood floor renovation? In case you forgot where it all began, let’s take a quick trip down memory lane. I can’t show you the reveal just yet 😉

About 9 weeks ago it looked like this.

Looking from afar, nothing was wrong with this kitchen. We loved it! However, taking a closer look, the floors were warped and the cabinets were damaged. To cover it up, we put bandaids on it to make it more our style. We painted the cabinets and added new super inexpensive hardware.

Here’s what it looked like when we bought the house.

As for the floors… this was only part of the damage. There was so much more underneath those cabinets and it turned out the subfloor had to be removed too. We were talking a full on kitchen gut.

This is what started it ALL… the reason for this kitchen makeover!

Due to all of this water damage, we knew we needed something durable that could outlast any other water issues that came our way … especially now that we have two boys. We searched for months to find the perfect flooring and that’s when we landed on Provenza’s Moda Living Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring. It’s waterproof, kid proof, and life proof. Yup, checked all of the boxes.

I cannot believe how quiet and level these floors are! We were so used to walking on warped and squeaking floors that this has been such a dream to have in our home and WORTH. EVERY. PENNY.

The Reveal

I am sitting at my new “desk” in my updated space with a cup of coffee, ready to take a peek at all of the designers’ amazing projects, but before I do… would you like to take a tour of my what my hubby and I have poured our blood, sweat and tears into?! Let’s go!

Here she is!

She’s the most beautiful mix of a warm, family-friendly, modern European farmhouse and she is a DREAM!

Now let’s get to the details!

We found our cabinet maker by fate. We had met with and received a handful of quotes from extremely talented carpenters. We were getting ready to hire one that we clicked with and then my husband called me on his way home from work as he drove by Haddox Custom Woodwork’s in Buford, Georgia. He met with Donnie Haddox and the rest was history! Donnie immediately saw our vision and we began dreaming up what this kitchen could be. Here were a few of our must haves:

  • Modern stacked upper cabinets
  • Inset cabinets with soft close drawers
  • Modern range hood to mimic plaster, without the cost
  • White Oak island
  • White Oak open shelves
  • Fridge-depth cabinets above the fridge
  • Pendant lights
  • Pot filler
  • Farmhouse sink
  • Quartz countertops
  • New backsplash
This is what I drew my inspiration from and we went to work designing the perfect Modern European Farmhouse kitchen.

Stacked Cabinets

The stacked cabinets were a must because it forms a cohesive, finished look. It may cost more to add stacked cabinets, but having a gap between your uppers and the ceiling can interrupt the flow of your cabinet design. An extra row of cabinets adds a sense of continuity to your kitchen space, resulting in a more seamless design. We had a sideboard in our dining room that just took up too much space paired with our dining table, and having stacked cabinets provided the storage we needed for China, serving platters and bowls, and other items that we pulled out for special occasions. Donnie and his team at Haddox Custom Woodwork’s completely nailed the stacked cabinets, don’t you agree?

The Shelves

We loved the layout of the kitchen as it was, so we kept it mostly the same. However, we knew we wanted to have open shelves somewhere, so we started dreaming up a different layout of the kitchen so we could incorporate something like this.

Design by: McGee & Co.

I loved the organic feel of white oak shelves. I knew I wanted these to provide form and function. I’m 5’2 (okay.. just shy of 5’2) and I wanted to be able to have the bottom two shelves within easy reach for everyday living.

SHOP THE SHELVES

The Sink

We used to have a stainless steel split double basin sink and the way it was configured made it almost impossible to clean dishes. The section with the disposal was the smallest, so cleaning our bigger pots and pans was frustrating. I’ve been dreaming of having a fireclay farmhouse sink, so I searched high and low and came across this gorgeous sink by Signature Hardware on Build.com and it has made all of my dish cleaning dreams come true!

I scoured the internet until I found the perfect fireclay sink and I knew Build.com was the place that had “the one”.

The coating of our stainless steel faucet was peeling off, so we opted to replace that as well. We chose this gorgeous Champagne Bronze faucet from Delta. It’s the Cassidy Pull-Down Kitchen Faucet with Magnetic Docking Spray Head and ShieldSpray. I loved the classic look of this design. Here’s what we love about this faucet:

  • It has a Lumicoat finish that easily wipes clean without the need for cleaners or chemicals and helps resist mineral buildup and hard water stains – less cleaning, perfect for a mom of two!
  • It repels liquids, resisting water spots and staying cleaner longer, so your faucet stays beautiful – um, hello, kids?!
  • Magnetic docking pullout spray head – it makes docking the spray head so easy with little hands
  • MagnaTite Docking uses a powerful integrated magnet to ensure your pull-down faucet wand snaps perfectly into place – and stays there. Did I mention this was perfect for kids?
  • The spray wand comes free with a gentle tug, giving you complete flexibility to accomplish kitchen tasks.

I never knew I would love to wash my dishes as much as I do now!

Pendant Lighting

With our old kitchen that we put a bandaid on to fix, we changed the layout of the island to have the counter stools face the stove and cooktop rather than having the counter stools face the sink. I love to cook and having the boys sit at the counter facing me while I cook just made more sense for our family in that direction. Luckily, pendant lights were never wired or installed prior to this renovation, so we could do whatever we wanted!

Build.com has knowledgeable Project Experts to help you find exactly what you need to make every home improvement project a success. They are available by phone, email., or chat 7 days a week – and the advice is always free! I found these pendant lights on Build.com by Savoy House and I fell in love! It came in a smaller size, the 10″, which that was the size our island required. I wanted something timeless and classic and this checked all of the boxes! Not only did it check all of the boxes, but it paired perfectly with all of the new warm brass accents in the kitchen.

The Range Hood

This was my hands down must have in the kitchen. In our previous kitchen, our range hood was a DIY project that covered existing kitchen cabinets. Since we completely gutted the kitchen, I wanted narrow cabinets to flank either side of the range hood and I worked with Donnie to bring my vision to life. He exceeded my expectations completely!

White Oak Island

The island was another must have because it was going to be the focal point of the entire kitchen. With the white oak wood on the open shelves and the range hood, I wanted to bring in a little more warmth on the island. I was a little uncomfortable going this route, to be honest, but my heart is all in with white kitchens, but I’m in heaven with this island. I think I drove my husband and cabinet maker crazy with my indecisiveness on this island. Are you team all white or add in a little bit of warmth on the island?

Pot Filler

Whenever you have the option, always always ALWAYS go for the pot filler. You won’t regret it! When I found the backsplash I wanted, I knew I had to have the this Delta pot filler to pair with our Delta Cassidy faucet. It is traditional, yet had a very European aesthetic.

Upgraded Hardware

I’ve been eyeing these cabinet knobs and pulls ever since I saw this house two years ago. When we painted our kitchen cabinets two years ago, buying knobs wasn’t really in our budget, so we picked up some super inexpensive knobs from a local store. Of course, we had many knobs break, so we knew we had to invest in hardware when the time came. These mushroom knobs and cabinet pulls from Top Knobs are heavy, solid and come in a gorgeous honey bronze finish that pair perfectly with the Savoy House pendants, Delta Cassidy faucet, and Delta pot filler.

We have the Top Knobs Channing cabinet pulls in each size, which made it so easy to pair with the different size cabinet drawers. They come in 2 3/4″, 3 3/4″, 5″ and 7″ and also come in the gorgeous honey bronze finish.

    • They’re the best ever!! They’re by Provenza Floor. They’re luxury vinyl plank flooring and are waterproof, kid proof, life proof. This is from the Moda Living Collection and the color is Finally Mine. Let me know if you have any more questions!

  1. Your kitchen turned out so beautiful. White and woods are my favorite combination and I will
be pinning this for inspiration when I get to due a full on reno of my kitchen. This was my first time participating in the ORC and am so excited to do it again with a much bigger project.

    • This was the best compliment to wake up to. Thank you so much Sonya! It was so fun to participate in a challenge like this with so many likeminded people. I cant wait to cheer you on for your next project!

  2. Do you have a source for the rug? I love how it brings the dining area and kitchen together with the slightest bit of color.
